Extreme Value Distributions

Extreme Value distributions arise as limiting distributions for maximums or minimums (extreme values) of a sample of independent, identically distributed random variables, as the sample size increases. Extreme Value Theory (EVT) is the theory of modelling and measuring events which occur with very small probability. This implies its usefulness in risk modelling as risky events per definition ha...

DNB Working Paper Dependence structure of risk factors and diversif ication effects

In this paper, we study the aggregated risk from dependent risk factors under the multivariate Extreme Value Theory (EVT) framework. We consider the heavy-tailness of the risk factors as well a non-parametric tail dependence structure. This allows a large scope of models on the dependency. We assess the Value-at-Risk of a diversified portfolio constructed from dependent risk factors. Moreover, ...

Value–at–Risk Prediction: A Comparison of Alternative Strategies∗

Given the growing need for managing financial risk, risk prediction plays an increasing role in banking and finance. In this study, we compare the out-of-sample performance of existing methods and some new models for predicting Value-at-Risk. Using more than 30 years of the daily return data on the NASDAQ Composite Index, we find that most approaches perform inadequately, although several model...

Using Extreme Value Theory to Estimate Value-at-Risk

Martin Odening and Jan Hinrichs Abstract: This article examines problems that may occur when conventional Value-at-Risk (VaR) estimators are used to quantify market risks in an agricultural context. For example, standard VaR methods, such as variance-covariance method or historical simulation, can fail when the return distribution is fat tailed. This problem is aggravated when long-term VaR for...

On Integral Operator and Argument Estimation of a Novel Subclass of Harmonic Univalent Functions

Abstract. In this paper we define and verify a subclass of harmonic univalent functions involving the argument of complex-value functions of the form f = h + ¯g and investigate some properties of this subclass e.g. necessary and sufficient coefficient bounds, extreme points, distortion bounds and Hadamard product.Abstract. In this paper we define and verify a subclass of harmonic univalent func...
